Lisa and I were both off work on St. Patrick’s Day. It was predicted to be 75 degrees and sunny. I asked Lisa if she wanted to meet on the monon with the kiddos and dogs, but she had a better idea. She thought we should go to the parade. (I don’t think I even realized there was a parade.) I hesitated because Adam is so small, I didn’t think he would really enjoy it. But the weather made for an absolutely perfect spring day, so I was happy to have an excuse to spend a few hours outside. I figured if nothing else this would be a good lesson in people watching for Adam! We packed up the stroller, the bjorn, and a couple of green blankets (because I didn’t know Adam’s gender I have more than enough green stuff for all the kiddos I know!) I dressed Adam in his little “My First St. Patrick’s Day” green striped outfit, and we were off. We got downtown plenty early, walked around, bought some green beads, and found a good seat in the shade (the mother side coming out in both of us…two years ago we would have practically been sun bathing on a day like this!). Taylor and Adam were mesmerized by the people, fire trucks, dogs, etc. They sat in their strollers for some time, and eventually ended up on our laps. The parade was nothing exciting. Mostly it was groups of school aged children walking down the street waving at the crowd. Taylor and Adam loved it. Watching them take everything in was so awesome. As the parade ended we got back in the strollers. Adam promptly fell asleep for a quick nap in the stroller. (We take walks nearly every day now, so he is so used to his stroller that he falls asleep easily. His days of complaining after 20-30 minutes in the stroller are over. Now he just passes out after 20-30 minutes!)
In all my years of drinking green beers and carrying on at Irish pubs I thought I knew all of the fun that could be had on St. Patrick’s Day…boy was I wrong. Watching Adam and Taylor take everything in at the parade was unbelievable. I spent most of the day outside on a beautiful sunny, spring day with my sister, my niece, and my son; and let me just say, I honestly can’t remember a better St. Patrick’s Day.
